As basketball season is set to start you may be wondering what the difference is between basketballs and how to choose the correct size and type of ball. While it may not seem like a big deal, the correct size ball is fundamental to a basketball player’s ability to handle the ball, improve their skills and prevent injury.
There are a few things you need to consider before purchasing a basketball. The players age, gender, and the type of surface the ball will be used on.
For Men or Boys 12 and older:
Size 7 Ball
Circumference of 29.5-30 inches
For Women or Boys 8-12:
Size 6 Ball (WNBA Ball)
Circumference of 28.5-29 inches
For Players Age 8 and younger:
Size 5
Circumference of 27 inches
Pre-School & Young School Children:
Try a Mini-Basketball to build hand-eye coordination.
Circumference of 22 inches
Now that you know what size you need, it is time to think about the type of cover. The man factor to consider is if you will be using the ball indoors, outdoors or both.
For Outdoor play: Choose a rubber ball. Rubber is inexpensive and durable. Although the bounce is different from that of a leather ball, it is the top choice for Outdoor courts due to its durability.
If you play both indoors and out: Use a synthetic leather ball. It has the feel of leather but with more durability. This ball can be used both indoor and out and is less expensive than full-grain leather.
If you prefer indoor courts only: Choose a full-grain leather basketball. Full-grain leather is top of the line and is the most expensive choice, but will last well as long as it is only used indoors.
